Halloween @ Salem, Massachusetts

Halloween is observed on October 31, activities include attending costume parties, carving lanterns, lighting bonfires, apple bobbing, visiting haunted attractions, playing pranks, telling scary stories, and watching horror films. The costume dressing is most common, where in people dress as anything other than one self.

We had planned to visit Halloween  parade on Saturday but it  all went down the drain  due to excessive rains and snowing around Boston.Sunday came out be a better day although it was cold and we could see snow everywhere it was little better with sun shinning up in the sky .So we all decided to go to Salem, Massachusetts which is  a place know for its  history, which includes the tragic Salem Witch Trials of 1692, the glorious maritime era that left its mark on salem through architecture, museums, and artifacts, it has month-long celebration of Halloween.

Salem was in a full bloom  of Halloween Celebration, streets were crowded with people wearing masks, Halloween dresses, makeup in spite of the freezing temperatures. One could find sale of various winter clothes , masks, jewellery , people offering face makeup services so that you can look spooky enough :).
Seeing people around even we all got into Halloween spirit and got ourselves some spooky witch costumes and got our pictures clicked.

Following are the few pictures that we took.

Green Moong Dal Dosa

I've so many posts sitting in my drafts section about all the cooking I've been doing and the sweets I made during Diwali will try and post it all soon :)

Well this post is on Green Moong dal dosa which I made few days back.Dosas  are thin pancakes made from various batters.Moong dal dosa is a substitute for the dosas which we usually get in various Indian restaurants.I've added more dal and less of rice in this just to make it more healthy, one more advantage of adding more dal is that it won't stick to pan while cooking ( tip from my mom )

Ingredients :-
  1. 2 cups of Green Moong Dal ( Split or Whole)
  2. 1 cup rice
  3. 2 green chili finely chopped
  4. 1 tbsp of coriander leaves finely chopped
  5. salt as per taste
  6. oil for cooking

Method :-
  1. Wash the dal and rice  in water several times, until the water appears clear.
  2. Soak it overnight by adding 3 cups of water.
  3. Blend dal, rice, coriander leaves, chili and salt in a blender making sure the consistency of batter is correct ( It should not be very tick nor too watery)
  4. Use a non-stick flat skillet and place it on medium heat
  5. once heated , spread little oil on the surface of pan.
  6. Next pour about 1/2 cup of batter over center of the skillet and spread evenly with the back of a spoon. Starting from the center, spiral outwards until it is evenly spread, about 7inches in diameter.
  7. When batter start drying , put 1 teaspoon of oil and spread over gently using a flat spatula.
  8. Wait about 30 seconds flip dosa with a spatula, just as you would a pancake.
  9. Let the other side of the dosa cook for about one minute, or until golden-brown in color.
  10. Our dosa is done, serve it with chutney or ketchup

Karwa Chauth

Karwa Chauth Moon

Karwa Chauth is an ancient Indian tradition celebrated by married Indian women who fast from sunrise to moonrise for the longevity and health of their husbands.

When I was single, I often asked my mother why she would do such a thing when men don’t fast for their wives. My feminist side couldn't understand it. But now I married I kept this fast for Shivam.I feel Shivam doesn't have to fast for me because his fast is found is everyday small things that mean so much.

Shivam knows about my food habits and things I like to eat, so he would make sure that my fridge is stocked up with those, his afternoon calls to check whether I had my lunch.and many of his caring ways, which always reminds me of his love .So In my own little way I would want to say him I appreciate his caring ways :)

It was my first Karwa Chauth this Saturday, I got call from my mother a day earlier as what I should be doing , she was of the view if its too tough for me to keep the fast I can do it by having water , tea and fruits :)

Saturday morning I made my favorite food Rajma ( of course for the evening :) ) and the we went off for shopping for our winter clothes .I guess it was because of shopping spree I could withstand my hunger.

When we came back home in evening I made Suji Halwa , I had decided to wear a green Saree from my marriage so after 3 trail attempts I could wear it correctly in the fourth one :) then I did my prayers ,after seeing moon we both had dinner..Shivam got me Pizza ( one of my favorite ) and cake too

I had a nice first Karwa Chauth.

Our Visit To Taj Mahal, India

It was in my wish list to visit Taj Mahal which got fulfilled in May 2011, It was spectacular sight. The day we visited Taj Mahal it was windy and rainy which was quite opposite to the weather conditions which prevail in summer heat of North India , but it was a welcome relief for sure.We reached Taj around 12 pm  and it was so damn crowded.
The Taj Mahal is located in the state of Uttar Pradesh, in the city of Agra. Like most of India today, Agra is a highly polluted city. This pollution is taking a toll on the beautiful Taj. The once white marble is now a dirty grey. From far, a breath taking view of the Taj is marred by smog. It's sad to see it being damaged from all the smoke and smog of daily life today.

From the main gate till the main entrance of Taj there run rickshaws, one can even take a baggi ( kind of horse ride ) or one can walk as well.Once we reached the main gate of Taj we bought tickets , there were separate queue for men and women but it was heavily crowded because of summer holidays.
Seeing the Taj for the first time was amazing. There is a long walkway from the entrance to the actual structure. Halfway between the walkway and the actual Taj is a step/stage type structure with benches on it. It's the perfect picture setting, because when you sit on the bench, the Taj is behind you as the background.
When you approach the Taj (at the end of the walkway), you have to take off your shoes and turn them in for safekeeping. Shoes are not allowed on the marble. Since we had gone in afternoon, the marble was very hot because of the heat. I wish I had known I had to take my shoes off, because I was wearing sandals and didn't have socks on. My feet were burning because of hear :(
The Taj itself was magnificent. The outside of the building has beautiful marble carvings all along the walls. There are steps and walkways made of marble all around the building, and you can walk all the way around it.
The building and towers are perfectly symmetrical, so whatever is on the left side on the right.
Inside, you can view the marble tombs of Mumtaz and Shah Jahan. These are fake tombs, and the real ones are underneath. There are stairs leading down to the actual tombs, but those have been cordoned off. The inside of the Taj is lit by natural lighting, so it is a bit dark. The walls inside are also beautifully carved, with wonderful inlay work and intricate detail. The inside of the Taj is actually smaller than I has thought, and is much smaller than the outside of the building.
The Taj Mahal is open from 6am to sunset, which is around 7pm. It is closed on Fridays, but those who pray at the mosque next door can still visit it.
Another thing to note is that video cameras are not allowed past the walkway entrance. You can take a video of the Taj from the beginning of the walkway,
but can't go beyond that. You must check in your camera with the camera counter, and retrieve it on your way out. Flash photography is also forbidden inside the Taj.
Once you walk out of the entrance gate, be prepared to be bombarded with kids trying to get you to buy "authentic" Taj Mahal souvenirs.Don't fall for it. These kids get paid by the shop owners to bring in customers.
I really enjoyed my visit to the Taj, and I'm really glad I got a chance to see it. It was definitely a memorable experience!

Delicious Sabudana Khichdi (Sago flavoured with chilli-peanut powder)

The first time ever that I made Sabudana Khichdi, Today was 8th day of Navratri so me and my husband have both kept fast,I did get sabudana on Sunday but had never made it so was undecided whether I should try it or not , today morning when I was on call with mom she gave me sabudana recipe which I found very simple to make and luckily I had all ingredients to make it.I remember as a child I  never used to like it but today when I made it myself I found it so delectable So I'm sure to make it again :) Sabudana Khichdi is a pretty tricky proposition It matters how you soak the sabudana and one should not soak for too long, or in too much water that all you get is starchy mush, or on the other hand, a little less water and it would roll off like balls of mercury away from  your palm. Here I am posting my tried and tested method of making this amazing khichdi.
Ingredients:-
  1. 2 cups of Sabudana.
  2. 4-5 tbsp of raw peanut powder
  3. 4-5 Green chili finely chopped
  4. 2 Medium potatoes cut into big pieces
  5. 1 tbsp cumin seeds
  6. 7-8 Curry Leaves
  7. 1/2 tbsp of sugar
  8. 1/2 cup finely chopped coriander
  9. 2 tbsp of lime juice
  10. 1 tbsp of red chili powder
  11. 1 tbsp of oil
  12. Salt to taste.
Method :-
  1. Toss the sabudana into a big bowl and wash it under the tap. Allow it to drain
  2. Keep it this way for 2 hours at least covered with a lid, after an hour  just toss it but don't touch it with your hands or spoon
  3. Just before cooking add 1 1/2 spoons of salt to the sabudana as it soaks up the salt really well.
  4. Boil the potatoes and cut it into large pieces or just coarsely mash with your hands into big pieces.
  5. Take a Pan, add oil to it, once heated add cumin seeds, green chili and curry leaves, let it cook for a while.
  6. Add groundnut powder to this mixture and keep the flame very low and keep on stirring it for about 2 minutes.
  7. Add boiled potatoes to this mixture mix it well and let it cook for about 5 minutes.
  8. Now add soaked sabudana to this , mix it lightly, add red chili powder and sugar to this mixture.
  9. Cook it on a low flame by covering it with a lid and constant stirring for about 20 minutes.
  10. Garnish it with a dash of lime and finely chopped coriander leaves.
  11. Serve hot with curd by its side.
